Chilli con carne is one of the all-time great family dinners — and once you've made it with real spices, you'll never reach for a packet mix again. Smoky, warming and balanced, ours builds a rich chilli that only gets better the longer it sits. A real crowd-pleaser on the table in 30 to 40 minutes, or made ahead for even more flavour.

What it tastes like

Smoky, savoury and warming — cumin and smoked paprika with garlic, onion and oregano, and a gentle chilli kick. Not too fiery as it is, but easy to ramp up with extra chilli if you like it hot.

Cook this tonight

• Brown your mince, stir in the blend with tomatoes and beans, and simmer for a rich chilli — serve with rice, or in wraps with sour cream and lime.
• Use as a fajita or taco seasoning for chicken, beef or roasted veg.
• Rub onto meat, Seitan or tempeh and grill kebab-style, then serve in tortillas with a bean salad.

How to use it

A little goes a long way — one to two teaspoons is plenty for a family meal for four or five, and you can build the heat to taste. For chilli, add it early and let it simmer low and slow — make it the day before and it's even better. It works just as well with mince, chicken or meat-free options, so experiment.
