Harissa is Tunisia's national condiment — a smoky, fragrant chilli blend with a distinctive minty lift. It's one of our hottest, though we've built a more subtle version so you can dial the heat up to your own liking. Brilliant on meat, veg or stirred through a stew, it'll have dinner on the table in 30 to 40 minutes.
What it tastes like
Smoky, aromatic and warming — chilli and smoked paprika with cumin, coriander and garlic, lifted by caraway, oregano and a fragrant note of mint. There's real heat, but it's rounded and fragrant rather than just fiery.
Cook this tonight
- Rub onto chicken, lamb or fish before roasting or grilling — serve over couscous for a hearty evening meal.
- Sprinkle over cauliflower, carrots or chickpeas and roast for a smoky veggie main.
- Stir into stews, soups or a tray of roasting veg to add warmth and depth.
How to use it
A little goes a long way — one to two teaspoons is plenty for a family meal for four or five, and you can start light and build the heat to taste. Use it dry as an aromatic BBQ rub, or loosen with a little oil for a marinade. We love it simply, served with warm flatbread and hummus. It's as good on veg as it is on meat, so experiment.
