These oven-baked potato chips are a healthier alternative to traditional deep-fried chips, without compromising on taste. The SpiceMasters Ultimate Chip Seasoning adds a perfect kick of flavour, elevating this simple dish to a gourmet experience.
Ingredients
- 1 kg Maris Piper or King Edward potatoes
- 2 tbsp of preferred oil, corn, vegetable or olive oil.
- 2 tsp SpiceMasters Ultimate Chip Seasoning
Directions
Preheat the oven to 220°C (200°C fan/Gas Mark 7).
Cut the potatoes into even chip shapes, about 1cm thick. Leave the skin on for added nutrition and texture.
Placing them in a bowl of cold water at you chop them up.
Wash the potatoes thoroughly, this washing gets rid of excess starch and stops them sticking together. Drain and then pat them dry on a clean kitchen towel.
In a large bowl, toss the potato chips with your preferred oil until evenly coated.
Sprinkle SpiceMasters Ultimate Chip Seasoning over the chips and toss again to ensure even distribution.
Spread the chips in a single layer on a large baking tray. Ensure they're not overcrowded to allow even cooking.
Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, turning the chips after about 12 minutes through cooking and lowering the temperature to 200°C (180°C fan/Gas Mark 6).
The chips are done when they're golden brown and crispy on the outside, yet fluffy on the inside.
Remove from the oven and let them cool for a minute before serving.
If you own an air-fryer this recipe is great, toss the chips about every 5 minutes and use the roast setting which is typically about 180°C - 190°C, Both these actions will stop them overcooking on the outside.
Recipe Note
In the UK, chips have been a staple since the 19th century, often paired with fish. The modern oven-baked version emerged as a healthier alternative in the late 20th century, coinciding with growing health consciousness.
This particular recipe combines the British love for chips with the contemporary trend of using flavourful seasonings and healthier cooking methods. The use of Spicemaster's Ultimate Chip Seasoning adds a modern twist to this classic dish, reflecting the UK's evolving and diverse culinary landscape.
By oven-baking instead of frying, we're reducing the fat content significantly while still achieving that desirable crispy texture. This method has gained popularity in recent years as people seek to enjoy their favourite foods in a more health-conscious way.
